The human touch

Relaxed, unpretentious company and an informal exchange of minds

An inspiring home from home - with a human touch!

We offer a warm welcome to absolutely anyone looking for a little head room at our wildly beautiful getaways and farmhouse retreats in the Pyrenees. You may be yearning for an inspiring creative space to think through an idea for a book, or paint, or simply curl up in the corner of the sofa with a novel and a mug of tea - or a glass of wine.

An art or writing retreat with a difference ...

We offer a creative retreat without prescription or pretence; a simple, companionable home-from-home in the Pyrenees with 'hygge' for anyone who cares to pass by, coupled with the opportunity of some wonderful winter walks each morning and a delicious Basque meal together around the farmhouse table as the day draws to its close.

I too am trying to finish the first draft of my own book this winter and after looking into various retreats I find so many devoid of genuine human warmth, and so few that offer views as inspiring as those I have of the Pyrenees from every room in my house.

So I have decided to stay at home and open my doors once again ...

Creative retreats in the Pyrenees at our eagle's eyrie

  • Does the thought of a typical retreat sound a little too solitary or sterile?
  • Do you long for a little time out but not quite know where or how to go about it?
  • Do you have ideas or projects bubbling around in your head but have not found the place to tease them out, or give them form?

If so, why not join me at my farmhouse retreat in the Pyrenees where there are winter walks galore to shake away the cobwebs, a log pile full of wood, a wine chest full of wine and delicious, companionable evening dinners around the kitchen table?

Georgina Howard

Some retreats come with ‘gurus’ and ‘life coaches’ but I feel it pretentious to put myself forward as such. No formal training qualifies me for ´the job’ but 21 years’ experience hosting some 1500 guests at my home; facilitating and teaching groups of fascinating and sometimes disparate personalities from all over the world: Ambassadors, belly dancers, private detectives, white-shark feeders (yes, Paul, that can only be you!).

People from as far afield as Tasmania, Madagascar, Iceland and Hawaii have all ventured the 10 hair-pin bends to my home here in the Basque Pyrenees, humbled by its godly views and united by an equal layer of mountain mud on their walking boots. The formula is not rocket science. (A warm welcome, a great cook and a touch of madness enter the plot too!).

I started up my business over 20 years ago on the back of my first two books, Freedom to Choose, (Denmark 1997) and Breaking the Language Barrier (England 2001) and headed south to realise my dreams with Fred, my old Ford Escort, and a few bullet points on a piece of paper. I have – unequivocally – achieved these dreams and run Pyrenean Experience virtually single-handedly ever since.

I say ‘virtually’ as the Basque farming community have always rallied round me, helping me, as a single mother, to raise my daughter, digging us out of snow drifts, showing us how to stack the wood and teaching us both the laws of the land. (About Us) (See press reports)

And hereby lies the aim of my third and more ambitious book: ostensibly it follows my life story but its higher aspirations are to pay tribute to the noble, hard-working Basque shepherds of the Pyrenees without whom I would not be where I am - or who I am - today.
